How to Care for Roses at Home: 10 Tips for Long-Lasting Freshness

Trim the stems at a 45° angle
As soon as your bouquet arrives, cut the stems at a 45° angle with a sharp knife or pruning shears. This increases the water-absorbing surface. Cut the stems under water so no air gets inside.
Use clean, cool water
Change the water every 1–2 days. Use room-temperature water (neither cold nor warm). Rinse the vase before refilling it.
Add flower food
You can add to the water: 1 aspirin tablet, 1 tsp of sugar plus a few drops of bleach, or a special cut-flower food from a flower shop.
Remove the lower leaves
Strip off any leaves that sit below the waterline. They rot in the water and breed bacteria that clog the stems.
Keep the bouquet in a cool spot
Roses last longer at 15–18°C. Avoid direct sunlight, drafts and placing the vase near radiators.
Keep them away from fruit
Fruit (especially apples and bananas) releases ethylene — a gas that speeds up wilting. Keep the bouquet in a different room.
Mist the petals
A light misting of the petals with cool water from a spray bottle helps preserve freshness. Do it in the morning or evening, never in direct sun.
Move the bouquet somewhere cool overnight
At night you can move the bouquet to a cool place (for example, a balcony above 5°C or the fridge). This significantly extends the life of the flowers.
Re-trim the stems every 2–3 days
Give the stems a fresh cut (1–2 cm) every 2–3 days. This removes clogged sections and restores water uptake.
Use the right vase
The vase should be about 2/3 of the stem length. A narrow vase supports the stems and reduces water evaporation.
